Introducing Time-Based Access Policies
Time-based access policies in LifeVault Secure automatically grant a designated trusted contact access to specific vaults after a configurable inactivity window — typically 30 days. If you remain active, you can cancel any triggered request during the cooldown window. Available on Pro ($12/month), Vault ($29/month), and Family Legacy ($49/month) plans.
What Are Time-Based Access Policies?
At their core, time-based access policies are rules you define that control when someone can gain access to your vault contents. Rather than hoping a family member remembers a password written on a sticky note, or trusting that your business partner will somehow piece things together, you set the conditions once — and LifeVault Secure gives you the tools to act on them.
Think of it like a letter you write today that only gets delivered when certain conditions are met — except instead of a single letter, it's your entire digital estate, with precise control over who sees what and when.
The average person has over 100 online accounts. Without a clear plan for who gets access and when, those accounts become digital dead ends — inaccessible to the people who need them most.
When Would You Use This?
Estate Planning
Configure policies that release financial records, legal documents, and personal messages to your family after a life event is declared and verified by your trusted contacts. A built-in cooldown period gives you a safety window to cancel if the trigger was premature.
Business Continuity
If you run a business, an unexpected absence can grind operations to a halt. Set policies that grant your partner or key employees access to operational documents after a period of inactivity — so the business keeps running even when you can't be there.
Scheduled Sharing
Not everything is about emergencies. Schedule birthday messages, graduation letters, or even quarterly financial reports to be released on specific dates. It's a time capsule you can set and forget.
How It Works
- Choose Your Trigger
Decide what starts the process. Today, emergency access requests and inactivity monitoring are fully supported. Scheduled unlocks for specific calendar dates and life event declarations are coming soon. Each trigger type serves a different purpose — pick the one that fits your scenario.
- Set a Cooldown Period
Once a policy is triggered, a cooldown window begins. This is your safety net. If the trigger was a mistake — say, a false report — you have time to step in and cancel. Cooldowns range from 24 hours to 90 days, depending on how much buffer you want.
- Pick Your Recipients
Choose who gets access and what level of access they receive. You might give your spouse full Admin rights to financial vaults, while granting your children View-only access to personal memories. Different people, different permissions.
- Stay in Control
Active policies appear in your vault's Policy dashboard. You can see what's running, what's been triggered, and any cooldowns in progress. Modify or deactivate policies whenever your circumstances change.
Built-In Safeguards
Automating access to sensitive information is a serious responsibility, and we've designed multiple layers of protection to prevent misuse:
- Owner objection window — Cancel any triggered policy during the cooldown period if you're still able to
- Multi-party verification — Life event triggers require confirmation from multiple trusted contacts, not just one person
- Detailed audit trail — Every trigger, cancellation, and access grant is logged with timestamps and user attribution
- Configurable timing — You decide how long the cooldown lasts, balancing speed of access against protection from false triggers
